Parlor in the Round

Parlor is a songwriter showcase with an improv twist! This musical game show features Alaskan songwriters paired with nationally touring artists to trade tunes, stories, and songwriting homework in the first half. After the intermission, tradition is cast aside as the musicians dive into collaborations, jocular inventions, and premeditated musings all based on written submissions from the audience.

SuValley Band Lab
April 29 - May 3, 2024

SuValley Band Lab

Susitna Valley Jr Sr Highschool has partnered with Denali Arts Council to launch the innovative program, Su Valley Band Lab. This weeklong program running from Monday April 29th to Friday May 3rd will offer 3 hours of engaging musical exploration every day after school at the Su Valley Jr/Sr High School. Facilitated by the dynamic Indie rock hip-hop band Wasteland Hop, the Su Valley Band Lab aims to inspire and cultivate musical talent in our students.

Su Valley Band Lab will be directed by the band’s lyrical poet and Su Valley teacher, Mickey Kenny. Experienced in musical education, each of the six band members of Wasteland Hop will oversee a music station. During the first day of camp students will rotate through the stations: electric guitar, bass, drums, violin, vocals, and hip-hop vocals. The students will spend the rest of the week focusing on their chosen instrument. Not only will the youth learn their respective instrument, but the camp also prioritizes on how to work collaboratively in groups and how best to express oneself through art and music. The Su Valley Band Lab will culminate in an evening performance, open and free to the community on Friday, May 3rd. This celebratory event promises to showcase the musical journey and collective talents cultivated throughout the week, providing an opportunity for the community to come together and appreciate the creative endeavors of the participants.

Wasteland Hop

Wasteland Hop plays a unique brand of folk, rock and hip-hop. Their songs are a striking back-and-forth between soulful lead vocalist Steph Jay and MC Mickey Kenny, who shatters the divide between rap and poetry. The band blends Kenny’s insightful lyrics with high energy and funk-fueled beats.

Opening for Wasteland Hop is indie rock band Wiley Post, out of Anchorage Alaska.
