Robinson, who at 21 started his 45 year Alaska Range career on this climb. They flew into the mountains with Don Sheldon’s Talkeetna Air Service, basing their first week right in the original Sheldon Hangar, waiting—of course—for the weather!
In addition, Roger will begin the program with images and audio of the original team that tackled the route in 1954. This group of four hiked in from Curry along the Alaska Railroad, proceeding up the Ruth Glacier and eventually reaching the summit via the then-unclimbed South Buttress. Tragically the leader Elton Thayer lost his life on the descent down Karstens Ridge. What followed over the next week was a major rescue involving the first helicopters used in a Denali rescue.
Denali rescue volunteers have been assisting the park and climbing rangers for nearly 50 years. These volunteers donate their time, skills, and expertise to protect Denali’s mountaineering visitors and preserve its glaciated wilderness. Climbers and Denali National Park are indebted to them for their service.
Doors open at 6:30pm and Presentation starts at 7pm.
There will be great door prizes!
